Thursday, January 29, 2004Yesterday, I arrived home from work later than usual. You know what kept me? Magdaleno. He is a 4th grade student at Jefferson, son and sibling of gardeners. He’s poor. Or so I thought. 🙂 I asked him if he had a computer and he said yes. Trying to determine whether it was a Mac or a PC, I asked if it looked like the ones at school (Macs), and he said “no, XP.” Eek, a kid who knows his computer’s operating system? What’s more, he said it came with “512 megabytes of memory, and 80 gigabytes hard disk.” Hot damn, he knows how to use megabytes and gigabytes in a sentence! Internet access? Yes, he’s got that, and he ain’t messing with dial-up… it’s cable modem. Okay, okay, so he’s definitely not a kid of the 90s. But really, this kid fascinated me with the stuff he knew. He linked Isaac Newton to the law of gravity, Albert Einstein to the theory of relativity and his famous e=mc^squared formula — he even knows what each variable stands for! Guttenberg, Wright Brothers, Stephen Hawking, Pasteur, Neil Armstrong — Magdaleno knows them all! He knows the names of the last four presidents (I couldn’t ask him if he knew the fifth, as I myself don’t know who it was. Carter? Ford? 🙂 ). And when I jokingly asked him to spell the name of the current governor of California, he didn’t back down. I thought to myself, “If he gets to the first ‘e’ in Schwarzenegger, he’s got me beat at least in determination!” Magdaleno amazed me, and this was obvious to him. He giggled as he pointed at my face, saying I reminded him of this picture of Einstein. Damn kid. 🙂 Posted by at 8:09 pm [Permalink]
