Friday, October 8, 2004Things at work? I don’t think they’ve been better before. I’ve encountered students who seem willing to correct their wrong ways. They show regret and desire to make things better. Just today, a parent was telling me that one of our born-again kids (Juan, age 10) approached her a few weeks ago and asked her if she was the mother of so-and-so. She said she was. He apologized to her for having caused her daughter problems in the past. He said he had changed. Yup, he has… I can vouch for that. Juan is one of several kids whose behavior has improved in recent months — from nightmares to model-students. My relationship with teachers is also going well. On Tuesday one said to me, “The ladies were watching you work and you left them in awe. You really impressed them.” I think she was talking about some teachers she hangs out with at work. They must have walked by as my coworkers and I put 200 first graders in line, after their recess had ended. It ain’t easy shit putting them kids in line, and when they saw how great the kids were doing, they gave me the credit. Then today, upon being asked by someone standing next to me if she had an assistant, a teacher responded something to the tune of “Well, I do, but I want Mr. Quiterio.” She turned to me and said, “I’d buy you presents, Mr. Quiterio.” Hehe, the guy who asked her the question wouldn’t stop teasing me because of her status as one of the youngest/bestlooking teachers at work. She, too, has seen me work, and I guess she liked what she saw. So yeah, these days I’m enjoying my job. If you’ve forgotten, I work at an elementary school as a teacher-assistant, but a great deal of my job involves being outside of the classroom making sure the kids are safe. At this point the big drawback is the pay… $9.74 an hour. I guess I could also strip-for-cash on weekend nights at the local nursing home… Posted by Dusky at 9:09 pm [Permalink]
