Wednesday, June 18, 2003I’m taking my responsibility as leader of the yard supervisors seriously. It’s getting to me. I’m stressed. Things in the yard are better than they’ve been in the past three years, but they are still not where my coworkers and I would want them to be. It’s got to be mentioned that Monday was a good day, though. Children walked to their playing areas as if they had no interest in being the first ones to get there. After the bell, they returned to their lines the same way. It was beautiful. I should have taken pictures and sent them to the LA Times (newspaper). Another good sight was seeing the first graders’ attitude toward balls. Throughout their first months as first graders, up to the middle of the year, the first graders knew only two things to do with balls. One thing they’d do is carry the ball around the playground. Some balls were so big that in order to carry them they had to place their cheek against the ball, with their hands around the ball as far as they could reach (usually the middle), and walking without being able to see in front of them. Once they were tired, they’d place the ball on the ground and sit on it. That’s all balls were good for: carrying them, and sitting on them. Things are different now. The first graders actually make long lines to play handball. They can also be seen playing bounceball and kickball. They must have gotten tired of playing the chicken game. They are ready for second grade. 🙂 Or maybe not. I was asking a first grader his information, so I could write a note sending him to the nurse. I asked what room he was in. He thought. He thought. He thought. Then he looked at his little friend and asked him, “What room am I in?” The little friend asked, “What?” Then he added with confidence, “Oh, first grade!” Mhm, first grade. 🙂 Posted by at 11:59 pm [Permalink]
