A man is giving his sister a ride to a friend's house. She needs to return a videotape that her friend loaned her. They arrive. He parks the car and tells her to hurry back. She walks away. The minutes pass, and the dude becomes impatient. He looks around and sees no signs of his sister. Through his rearview mirror, he does see two people: a blonde lady and a man. The lady is facing the man, walking away from him, travelling in circles. He's after her, taking slow swings. The man in the car assumes that they're playing. He lets things be. Time passes and his sister is still not back. The impatient brother is kinda upset that she's making him wait longer than he is willing to. He has decided to go look for her. He passes near the couple, trying to ignore whatever it is they're doing. He stops in front of a building and looks around for his sister. He does not know which building his sister's friend lives in. He continues walking. He reaches the corner, and looks to his left. Nothing. Then he looks in the direction he had come from. He sees the couple once more and realizes that the man is drunk. Were they having an argument? His mind travelled back in time. He thought of the time when he was about 12 years old. He recalls a neighbor of his being beaten in public by her man. Teenagers watched. Adults watched. Nobody did anything. He also recalled an article about a woman who had been murdered in her own neighborhood and although she screamed for help, nobody came to her rescue. He had felt indignation toward the neighbors' indifference. The images vanished. He remembers the situation at hand. He wonders what he can do to keep the drunk man from getting crazy on the girl. At the same time, he hopes his sister re-appears before he does something crazy himself. For now, he walks back and forth toward the couple, and away from the couple. He wants to make his presence felt. He's well aware that his behavior might provoke the drunk into attacking him. That does not stop him. His sister finally appears. He walks toward her, passing the couple. Suddenly, he turns around and approaches the couple for the last time. He says, "Lady, are you feeling threatened?" as he points to the tall drunk . The drunk stares at the daring midget with surprise. The lady responds, "no, everything is fine, thank you." He accepts her answer and goes on his way. His message had been sent; he did give a fuck. |
