I went to bed at around 8:30pm last night. At around 10:48pm, the living room was filled with laughter. From my bed I could discern the voices of Alejandro (cousin), Jaime (brother-in-law), and Tomy (my brother, who had just made it home from San Francisco). They were having a good time. I fell back asleep, and woke up a little before 1am. They were still jovial. On one hand, I was glad they were having a good time, but on the other, I wanted to sleep! Zzz I went again.

At around 4am my mother was awaken by Guera (sister). From across the hall she anguishly told my mother, “Something’s wrong with the baby!” Still in bed, my mother asked her to bring him to her. She did. His eyes had rolled back. His legs were kicking. Just last night he could have been seen smiling, dancing, and responding to his mother calling him “Pikachu.” Now he laid there unresponsive to anything said to him, fighting for his life. My mother blew some air into his mouth, and he showed signs of improvement. They took him to the hospital immediately after, there still was hope.

It was this morning that I found out what had happened to James. As my mother described to me what had happened, I placed myself in Guera’s shoes. Eek, scary. The closest I had come to that was the time when I saw the family hamster breathing heavily, agonizing after I had accidentally stepped on it. It was shocking! Seeing James fighting for his life would have been unbearable. I looked away throughout great part of my mother’s narration.

Fortunately, James is doing alright now. I saw him this morning riding on his mother’s arms. I didn’t say a word to either one of them, but I smiled to myself, being big-time glad life has given him another chance.
