So how does a student go from getting an A in the first exam to a zero on the second exam? First make sure you’re taking a course that meets only once a week. Meaning, each session lasts two to three hours, and it covers lots of materials. Get sick on the class-meeting prior to an exam. E-mail your teacher asking him if it’s possible for you to attend a lecture of the same course, but on a different day. Have your teacher fail to respond to your e-mail. Study hard. Show up to class. Accept exam. Stare at it blankly. The rest takes care of itself.

My Intro to Linguistic book states that many students ask what the difference is between derivational and inflectional morphology. They provide two or three sentences on the subject, one of them being something along the line of “If it isn’t inflectional, it’s derivational.” Yet, tonight, there I was, being asked to write paragraphs after paragraphs on the subject. Right.

And so… surrounded by many more As than Bs, an F. An F. Not just any F, but a hard-earned F.
