Sunday, February 16, 2003Didn’t bother to go to the park yesterday, but I did this morning. At the park I kicked it with some dudes while the goals were being set-up. One of them was an 18 year old gangbanger. The young gangster sought attention. He spoke of how the cops were looking for him because he had beaten up a guy who had asked him what gang he was from, which later led to a fight. He told us that after he had the guy on the ground, a buddy of the fallen guy came running, but stopped far enough, realizing the guy left standing was willing to fight a second person. I asked him how long he had been banging for. He said six years, and that he has been smoking weed on a regular basis for almost as long. I also asked him what his father felt about him being a gangmember. He said everyone in his family banged, even his ten year old brother. He then went on and told us about the number of guns he owned, and the things he has done to defy the authorities. For example, he says that recently he called a cop a “puerco” (a pig) to his face and that he had torn to pieces a ticket that had been given to him. He finally added, “if they send me the ticket in the mail, it better reach me before it reaches my dad, or he sure will kick my ass…” To me, he didn’t look like a gangbanger. His shirt would be the kind I’d wear on a date, and his pants were not as baggy as one would expect a gangbanger to wear. But then again, I’m under the impression that there are fewer gangmembers around. Perhaps the reason for that is that I’m no longer able to identify them. Posted by at 9:06 pm [Permalink]
