Thursday, April 3, 2003Hmm, out of the ordinary. Jazmine, a third grader in a class where I’m the assistant, kneeled in front of the entrance gate to pick up a USA FLAG ribbon that was dropped by someone. She seemed fascinated. She passed in front of me and said, “Good morning Mr. Quiterio”, as she does every morning. She returned less than a minute later saying “Look, Mr. Quiterio, I found a dollar!” She handed it to me. I told her that if by the end of the schoolday nobody claimed it, it would be hers. I also thanked her fo having brought it to me. She was excited to know she might have a dollar by the end of the day. Jazmine returned, again, within half an hour. She had found another thing. This time it was a talking-watch. Again, she gave it to me. She must have felt so lucky finding three things within an hour. I know I would have. Kevin, a second grader in another class where I’m the assistant, was walking toward me looking at the ground. He had lost something. I knew what it was. I described the watch to him, mentioning that it talked, and Kevin got excited with each description I gave him. I then said, “Nope, I haven’t seen it.” I brought my hand into my pocket looking for the button that made the watch talk. When he turned around I pressed the button and a big smile came on his face. He immediately looked at his wrist, then at the ground. Nope, not there. I pressed the button again, and this time he realized where the sound had come from. He must have felt so good to have found his watch. I felt good just to have witnessed it. School was over and nobody claimed the dollar Jazmine had found. She approached me and I said to her, “Thank you for doing the right thing.” as I gave her the dollar. Posted by at 7:52 pm [Permalink]
