There are many reasons for which I deem myself fortunate.

  • Although I find many, many, many women attractive, I would not do anything with them against their will. I’m able to control my animal urges. I would not want to scar a woman by subjecting her to the horrendous experience that must be forcing one to have sex. This stand of mine keeps me from hurting a woman whose only fault is her good looks. Not as important, but worth mentioning, it certainly keeps my big behind out of Saint Quentin Penitentiary!
  • I live at a time when being atheist does not get me crucified, or something of the sort. Had I lived much earlier in human history, I don’t know what would have become of me. I can wholeheartedly tell you that it’s not about what I want to believe, for it were so, I’d be a believer. I was once a believer, now I’m not; my disposition remains the same.
  • Even with the low demand that there is for a short, silly, dusky guy like me, it’s not easy being faithful. There are women out there who are interested in hooking up. Remember what I wrote above about me finding so many, many, many women attractive? That, and the fact that some women (besides the gf) dig me is what makes it not-so-easy to do the right thing; remain faithful. If with the current low-demand for a guy like me I’m tempted enough, now imagine if I were hot (to borrow a term from women)! My average-at-best looks are a blessing in disguise, for they (indirectly) help me do the right thing.

The list goes on. What triggers this list? This story: A clown is arrested on child porn charges.

Let’s say the clown’s guilty. I don’t know if “I feel bad for the clown” is the phrase I want to use. I do feel that the clown can’t help it that he/she is that way — perhaps because I relate his sickness to my atheism. I do not condone his acts, but neither do I feel I can point my finger at him. I’m fortunate. You’re fortunate. We’re fortunate that we do not share with this clown that particular interest in children. There are other things I do that are wrong, though. There are other things that you do that are wrong. And for doing/enjoying those things, we’re damned!

  1. I just wanted to add that driving like a maniac is no longer one of those wrong things I tend to do. Since I stopped using the Eclipse, I drive much safer. Even old ladies honk at me to get me to speed up! 🙂

P.S: Yes, I know that driving slow is not necessarily driving safely. Take a damn joke!

  2. hi. this may sound a weird request, but i was curious if you knew the root or the meaning of the name fidencia. my abuela’s name was fidencia, and in her recent death, i find myself curious of its a) english equivalent and b) it’s root/meaning. the internet has given me nothing, except for the fact that’s in the masculine it’s fidencio, and, your site of course 😛
whether or not know you know what i’m curious about, thanks.

  3. I’ll take a crack at that one, Alicia… I believe that Latin root comes has to do with safety/security and trust. As far as English equivalents, no idea.

Here’s a page where the Latin root is discussed:

Now as for Dusky – you’re a better man than I am. Good luck fighting the fidelity battle. I’m more convinced every day that we men aren’t built for it. 😉

  4. Thanks to clues provided by Christian above, I was able to find this other page:

    Nombre Santoral – Fidencia

I can almost guess two things about your grandmother. One, she was called “Dencha” by those who were close to her. Two, she was born on the 27th of September. If I’m correct, let me explain how I knew this: My great-grandmother was also named Fidencia, and my mother knew her as “Abuela Dencha.” On the 27th of September is the “Santo” of Santa Fidencia. If your grandmother was born on another date, then even better for her because then she probably received gifts on her birthday, and more gifts on her Santo.

Just in case your Spanish is weak… the page I linked above states that your grandmother’s name is derived from Latin and that its meaning is, “She who’s trustworthy.”

  5. Christian… it seems a man is to fall sooner or later. I must say that I do have the potential to remain faithful for as long as a relationship may last. To achieve this, I need the help of my partner. She must not only look her best, but treat me her best. If all she can do is get upset when I write on my blog that “I find many, many, many women attractive” then she’s not doing enough to keep me from doing something that I’ll later regret.
