Tuesday, August 3, 2004It’s 2:30 in the morning, the commotion is over and the last light has been turned off. There must now be one less rat left in this world. That, or there’s one more disgruntled 51 year old man (my father) who has looked up to the sky — with a broom in his hand — and pleaded to God that he won’t let a rat make a mockery of him. Talk about midlife crisis! Perhaps in my next lifetime I, too, will be part of the excitement. The idea of playing cops-and-robbers sounds interesting, if only it didn’t lead to the death of an animal. The death of animals at the hands of humans has been an issue in my life for the past few weeks. You won’t see me feeding or petting an animal, but if my way of thinking remains the same, you won’t see me killing one either unless its existence interferes with mine (in the short-run). I absolutely dislike the idea that the human race must persist even at the ill fate of non-rational animals. This is what happens when you encase your 160-pounds human body into that of a rat, wondering what it must be like to be one. It certainly must be full of excitement, as nothing freaks the hell out of you more than the idea of having to escape for your own life! So, now you know why I didn’t get off my bed to help my family catch that rat. I guess I’ve must have had too many nightmares where I feel defenseless and want to avoid being directly responsible for placing an animal in that situation.
