Saturday, April 2, 2005Pope John Paul II passed away today. I’m not Catholic, but as the humane Mexican that I consider myself to be, I’m thankful that he filled my countrymen with hope. For many Mexicans — the second largest group of Catholics in the world — the highlight of their lives was to have been standing within feet from the Pope in his trips to Mexico. For many more, his death is the death of someone close to them. Translation:Because you offered me your warmth, respect, and unconditional friendship, I’d eagerly greet you with a smile and a hug upon seeing you. I’d come to you to lead me out of hardship. No matter how strong the wind blew, you’d stand by me so as to keep it from bringing me down. You’d grant me a sense of reassurance in the face of adversity. I knew I could always count on you, and so it brought me great pleasure to have had you as a friend.
