On my way to CSUN last night I felt I was all hip, listening to Geto Boys‘ “My Mind Playin’ Tricks on Me” and Bloods and Crips‘ “Steady Dippin’.” It didn’t take more than two hours for me to get in trouble with the law. A cop pulled me over on the way back from CSUN.

The cop said I had been speeding. After handing him all pertinent documents, he asked me to tell him how fast I’m supposed to drive in a residential zone. “25…?” I said to him with uncertainty, ’cause 25mph seems like turtle steps by most people’s standards. As we spoke, I thought about how much he looked like white trash to me, but in a cop’s uniform. This came after it hit me that I was only driving as fast as the girl in front of me, who was not only “speeding” but talking on the phone at the same time. But that was okay. What wasn’t okay was for me to do over 25mph in a residential zone ’cause I’m a brown guy whose car license plate says “DUSKY” and I’m cruising through a residential neighborhood with homes priced between 750,000 and 1.5 million dollars.

Hehe, the dude asked me what I was doing in the area, as if a CSUN student never wanders into these streets to avoid the traffic of Reseda Blvd. But hey, I wasn’t going to say shit… I’ve seen too many episodes of Cops to know better! Besides, he had handed me back my car registration and driver’s license without a ticket, and that was good enough for me. Wasn’t gonna let this bastard pull a Rodney King on me, now was I? Like I said, too many episodes of Cops.

Aight, there ends my lil story. Its point: shorty was definitely not meant to be a thug. Hey, speaking of thugs, let me tell you the names of some thug-themed songs I like: My Mind Playin’ Tricks on Me, Steady Dippin’, La Raza, Boyz N’ Tha Hood, Posse On Broadway, Summertime In The LBC, On A Sunday Afternoon, and Today Was a Good Day.

Am I old or am I old? 😀

  1. Those songs are not old! they will live forever! “On A Sunday Afternoon” is immortal! And that cop sounded like a jerk, good thing you came out alright though, thank god for that!

  2. The songs will certainly live forever. 🙂 As to the cop… because I appreciate that I was let go with a warning, I must either drive slow through the neighborhood where I was stopped, or avoid the area altogether. I’d hate to meet the cop again under similar circumstances… I wouldn’t stand a chance this time.
