As my family and I were driving home, firework could be seen left and right, ahead and behind us. It seemed as if all of Los Angeles was celebrating with us. A little more than 16 years ago, as recently arrived immigrants, my parents, two siblings and I rented one corner of my aunt’s living room. Tonight, on America’s 229th birthday, we made our way into a house that now bears my family’s name. And who knows, if we’re still alive thirty years from now we just might celebrate making the very last payment. 😀
