Have you ever wondered why dictionaries are referred to as tumbaburros by some Spanish speakers? I have, and I think I have figured out why. Tumba comes from tumbar, and tumbar means to cause to fall. Burros are, well, burros (aka donkeys), and they are well known in Mexico for their effectiveness as transporters (carriers) of goods. A dictionary is usually the thickest book a person will use in elementary school. So… tumbaburros because they are so heavy that even a donkey’s back would bend when carrying it!

Yeah, I’m aware that a person is often referred to as being a burro if he isn’t the brighest crayon in the box. And yes, I’m also aware that a guy with a big wang is also referred to as a burro… for being endowed as a burro down yonder. And then there are burritos, burradas, and chupacabras, but I’ll leave those issues for another night. 😀

Note: The great, great, great majority of people will say that dictionaries are called tumbaburros simply because they rid people (namely burros) of their ignorance. So yeah, you just wasted 30 seconds of your time by reading this entry. 😀
