Thursday, December 15, 2005No matter how tall a wall is erected, immigrants will continue to come in high numbers. I came to this realization the other day when I thought about a cousin of mine who recently arrived to the United States without documents. She was caught by immigration officials a couple of times, and all this meant that she would have to try to cross again. The immigration push and pull factors would not allow her the luxury to concede defeat. I can name dozens of people like her, but I can name only two who would have given up on trying to come to America had they encountered significant resistance. A few months after their successful attempt to cross the border, those two men returned to Mexico because they determined that life in America was not for them. Those two men are the exception to the rule; as long as the pull factors remain as they have in all the history of the United States, there will always be a nation that pushes its citizens out of its boundaries and into those of the United States. Anti-immigrants couldn’t have picked a worst thing to care about. Posted by at 10:24 am [Permalink]
