Saturday, May 31, 2008Playing pick-up soccer, I come across people from different backgrounds and attitudes. One of my soccer mates is an ex-con and former gangster. Today he asked me for a ride home, and since his house is a 15-minute drive from the park but still within my route, I agreed. As he put his belongings inside the car I remembered the many “Cops” episodes I’ve watched where the officers tell suspects that they are responsible for items found in their car. “Interesting,” I thought. About half-way home I asked him how long it had taken him to get to the park riding the bus. He responded, “45 minutes to an hour.” Still attempting to hold a conversation with him, I asked him how much he pays for a monthly bus pass. He said he paid $14. That seemed really low, so I was convinced he was getting a discount, perhaps the result of a disability. I asked him if it was a bus pass for disabled passengers, and he said it was. I asked what his disability was, and since he was taking a little long to respond, I almost mentioned some of the common ones, and mental retardation was the first one I was going to name. Yeah, very smart of me. I opted to keep my mouth shut as he figured out a way to tell me himself. He said, “I’m szichophrenic. I hear voices.” Not quite apt at choosing the right words, I said, “Damn, that’s fucking crazy.” My next thought was, “So this is how it all ends, eh?” What actually came out of my mouth was, “That must be fucking weird… hearing voices.” Yeah, I was certainly helping him keep his cool with what I was telling him. I then took the luxury of wondering which was the best way to avoid a beating: keep talking so as to muffle the voices, or staying quiet and letting the voices speak on my behalf. Considering the stuff I was saying, I think it was a toss… Posted by at 10:30 pm [Permalink]
